Mira Mesa Community Park

Public Art Commission, San Diego, CA, 2019 - 2025

The City of San Diego has commissioned Parkeology to create a site-specific artwork for the Phase II improvements to Mira Mesa Community Park.

Mira Mesa Community Park is home to a wealth of festivals and social gatherings that reflect the diverse culture of Mira Mesa, including Diwali, Tết, Holi, Fourth of July, and The Filipino Sun Festival. Weekend birthday parties, barbecues, and sports activities keep the park well used by visitors of all ages throughout the year. This amphitheater-like sculpture will serve as another site for parties, workshops, relaxation, and play.

Through community workshops, we will create a library of images important to the cultural diversity, wildlife, history, and communities of Mira Mesa. This imagery will be collaged, combined, and cut out of the 1” steel plate, which will form the amphitheater-like sculpture. On sunny days, these cut-out shapes will cast shadows on the park and people.  At night, this amphitheater-like space will glow with LED lights. This project will be located between the two playgrounds, next to the Mira Mesa Recreation Center.
